1960-’63 AWAKENING is the second memoir in the series. It chronicles Billy and his brothers being shuffled between a middle-class family in the suburbs and the poor neighborhood he calls home.
Billy has several adventures dealing with culture shock, new school friends, girlfriends, and traveling. Basketball plays an important role in his acceptance in a world he had never been exposed to. He trusts the family and gets to live like all kids should be able to, but there’s a hidden agenda. He’s being groomed.
The betrayal eliminates his ability to trust anyone for many years to come. The early teen years are difficult in the best of situations. A betrayed trust would haunt Bill for the rest of his life.
The Awakening title is fitting for this time in Billy’s life. His eyes are opened to a world that would become his goal to achieve. This book is about contrasts, values, and determination to escape.
